Nasolabial Folds were once thought to be caused by the muscles we use to smile, but this is incorrect. They are actually an inevitable sign of ageing.
These lines become visible for the first time in an individual’s twenties. As we get older existing Nasolabial folds seem to emerge or become more prominent. In reality the folds themselves do not change, rather, the loss of tissue volume elsewhere in your face combined with the movement and decline of cheek volume make the folds appear to deepen.
It would seem that the old adage “if you want to know a woman’s true age look at her hands” may be true after all. According to a study published in the official Medical Journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons researchers demonstrated this. Participants were shown unaltered photographs of only hands and in the majority of cases were able to correctly deduce the biological age of the person photographed.
Getting rid of a troublesome wrinkle
Towards the end of 2015 and into 2016 the Aesthetic Medicine Field focused upon holistic treatments and improving skin health, as a healthy skin base not only improves visible age but also creates a preventive measure to future chronological ageing.
This being true, there is also the client that simply requires a single wrinkle to be treated & nothing more.
For some, they already undertake a strict homecare regime and visit their aesthetic doctor periodically but erasing a single or deep wrinkle evades them. For others, they may not be interested in holistic skin ageing, but still have a worrisome wrinkle they wish would disappear. This is a treatment overview for you both.
When I look upon a client for skin rejuvenation, my first point of reference is to reverse the signs of visible age as naturally as possible, with minimal downtime. I look upon your skin holistically, and this includes a Visia Skin Analysis:
With this approach you can see why a treatment plan is so detailed. Should you have a single wrinkle treatment in mind, please ensure that you bring it to my or your aesthetic doctor’s attention.
There are three options when treating a single problem wrinkle. They are of course location & depth dependent.
Should your trouble wrinkle be not excessively deep it is often wise to treat the skin as a whole to minimize the visibility of the wrinkle. Using hyaluronic acid, I inject the skin in a grid pattern, and of course, focus product into the trouble spot. The product is designed to not only lift but also hydrate the skin. This treatment treats the wrinkle & addresses many of the fine lines of the face at the same time.
A single treatment is often enough, but I do recommend a second visit to prolong the result.
Should you have a deep wrinkle that cannot be treated using the skin treatment method above I often opt for a thicker & more viscous hyaluronic acid
to target the wrinkle directly. By injecting it beneath the wrinkle we push the skin outward and effectively smooth the skin’s contours – minimizing the visibility of the wrinkle. This was the standard approach to wrinkle treatment since HA Dermal Fillers first made their mark on the aesthetic world.
Treatment approach varies dependent on the winkle location but in most cases I either use a micro-cannula or a fine gauge needle to perform the treatments.
Depth of the wrinkle dependent, either a single or double treatment is required to be rid of that troublesome wrinkle.
There are cases, and they are more frequent than you think, that the troublesome wrinkle is in fact caused by two factors. A skin crease is emphasized by chronological aging depletion of skin hydration & elasticity, but is also created by overactive muscle action. Take your frown lines for example.
If this is the case then the approach is minimize muscle movement using Botulinum Toxin and then fill the wrinkle using option 2 above.
We need to add Botulinum Toxin to the treatment, as the overactive muscle will simply force the wrinkle to become visible should we opt for a simple dermal filler or skin treatment approach.
Often a single treatment is all that is required in these cases but results will take a few days to become apparent simply due to waiting for the Botulinum Toxin to take full effect.
If you are working with me currently on a more holistic aesthetic medicine plan you will notice how the above-mentioned treatments are still used but in connection with other treatment options like chemical peels, vampire facials & selected homecare products to improve the overall quality, complexion & youthfulness of the skin. The choice is of course yours, and I simply want to make it known that these treatment options still do exist.
Should you have any anti-ageing queries or questions, please feel free to make an appointment to see me on 011 954 0070.

Natural anti-ageing results are created slowly with regular treatments
As we age our skin is subjected to natural wear and tear just like other organs, plus throwing lifestyle choices into the mix does not always make for the healthiest skin. But still, we all want a youthful and younger looking skin? Truth be told, we all know that we can make better daily choices to improve our overall health, and that this will directly influence our skin’s radiance. A major contributor to skin ageing and appearance of wrinkles is an unhealthy lifestyle speeding up the ageing process. But it is never too late to start living healthily and to enjoy the maturity that it involves.
Our skin consists of a matrix of fibre that comprises of two important proteins – elastin and collagen. The loss of collagen is a primary reason for wrinkle development and loss of elastin results in sagging. However, it is possible to minimise natural skin ageing by repairing these proteins and restoring them using state of the art treatment protocols. But this has to be matched with lifestyle choice to better enhance the results.
The results everybody wants
Most of us want to get maximum results as fast as possible, and thus, we spend lots of money to attain that look. The experts wave infrared wands, needles & toxins, and prescribed seemingly supernatural ingredients to radically reverse the signs ageing. This often means that the treatments chosen are expensive and incur notable downtime due to their severity.
However, a handful of us have developed strategies of patience and combine aesthetic medicine with natural ways to reduce the signs of ageing. This means a slower process but a more natural and discreet result. What results do you want?
Aggression and quantity mean two things: cost & downtime. Many patients are happy to pay a single treatment fee and take on the social downtime to achieve this quick result but for many this is too much to ask. However, option 2 exists.
With this approach we recommend monthly visits for minor treatments including superficial peels, less aggressive laser and minimal quantities of Botulinum toxin & dermal fillers. This approach allows Dr vd Mescht to continually maintain your age-reversal according to your naturally ageing skin.
There are major treatments to reverse the signs of ageing either in the form of aesthetic medicine or surgery. The choice is yours to how visible you want each treatment to be to your friends, and/or how much you are prepared to spend. The joy of advanced techniques and modern aesthetic medicine is that you can now achieve a result regardless of budget. You simply need to work with a professional experienced in all types of anti-ageing and all types of skin.
Make your appointment with Dr Martina vd Mescht today to discuss how to achieve your best results as easily as possible.
Because the world needs Smiles
A smile is a beautiful thing. A simple smile can lift spirits of those around you, not to mention yourself. In fact, studies have revealed the individuals who smile regularly are considered more confident and more competent by their peers and that the act of smiling triggers the brain, irrespective of spontaneity, to improve ones mood. All the more reason to smile, don’t you think? The most common reason, however, not to smile more often is embarrassment: be it yellow teeth, thin lips or smokers lines… subconsciously we know that aged lips or chipped teeth are a focal point on our face and we try avoid bringing more attention to it.
Most people simply don’t smile to hide discolored, missing or chipped teeth, or they overuse make-up to recover thin or unsymmetrical lips. Immediate correction is possible today. Teeth whitening and dentistry techniques make the perfect row of pearly whites an option, but at a price. Similarly, aesthetic medicine has developed many techniques to create the perfect smile, pout, lip line and even reshape the mouth.
That being said not everyone has the time or budget to attain immediate results so here are my top 6 tips to get your smile out on every occasion. After all, your smile could change the world.
Condition your lips daily
Using lip balm daily will reduce dry lips and minimize moisture loss that will ruin the plumpness and shape of your lips. The trick is to use the correct lip balm… it’s worth it to buy top of the line.
A great tip: apply some lip balm before bed in the evening too and feel the results in the morning.
Exfoliate your lips
This is not in the traditional sense of exfoliation, but by rubbing cosmetic lip exfoliator or even brown sugar on you lips will remove any loose skin. There is nothing worse that dangly skin coated in lipstick. Creating a smooth platform for the next steps will give you superb confidence in your next smile.
Create a chiseled outline
Choose a lip liner that is similar to your lips. Then outline your lips just outside the natural contour of your lips. This will create the impression of larger lips associated with youth, and provide a larger canvass for step 4.
Fill and clean
Apply your lipstick of choice to the entire lip and use a lip brush to get it to the edges of the border you have just created. Then, here comes the kicker, use a small brush and base product to correct any minor mistakes. This absolutely embellishes the perfected lip line and will further add to your new found smile confidence.
Apply gloss (optional)
Finish your lips with lip-gloss. This is neither for everyone, nor for every occasion but the glisten and gleam will take years from your visible age, as this hydrated sheen is most commonly associated with youth. If you do apply gloss, please remember to reapply throughout the day.
Whiten those teeth
Lip shape sorted, it is time to get those pearly whites, white! There are a few dental do-it-yourself whitening kits on the market but more and more toothpaste manufactures are creating products to do just the same.
Simple tips like avoid drinking excessive tea or coffee will certainly help but brushing twice daily with whitening toothpaste will also give you confidence to lift everyone’s mood with a smile.
Of course the results in my Top 6 tips will not match professional techniques, products and protocols but at least now you can save up for the anti-aging treatments you really want and still have reason to smile. Use these tips even once you have completed your aesthetic lip sculpting treatment and further emphasize your new look and confidence.

Complete your UV protection to prevent skin ageing
Living in South Africa we are aware of a few home-truths: 1. Sun damage from overexposure is a significant cause of wrinkles and premature ageing. (Not to mention cancer). 2. Escaping the harsh South African sun requires multiple approaches i.e. sunblock, protective clothing and avoiding the sun during the harsh hours. 3. Even under the most heavy and cloudy day we are still susceptible to UV damage.
What we are not so aware of, however, is the role that indirect UV damage causes. Much of what we are taught or read about relates to direct sun exposure and the ageing effects thereof, these are called Beta Rays, but little is spoken about the damage caused to your skin from driving, common household lights or even watching TV.
There is a common misconception that Alpha Rays (UV-A) does not damage the skin or cause visible skin ageing. This may be true in the sense that damage is not immediately felt or visible, but make no mistake the damage is being done.
UV-A light is far more prevalent than UV-B in that as much as 95% of all the UV light reaching earth is considered UV-A. This means we are exposed much more to the effects of UV-A.
Another harmful consideration is the UV-A Rays are equally prevalent during the day and night, can also penetrate clouds but importantly for us in South Africa, can penetrate glass i.e. while you are driving – this makes them specifically harmful to our driving/outdoor/social lifestyles.
A scary thought
UV-A is the ray responsible for your tan. The risk, however, is that this tanning ray causes cumulative damage in the basal layer of the epidermis and this has now been proven to increase your risk of skin cancer. As for visible skin ageing, Alpha rays essentially damage your skin’s DNA. This means you may not necessarily feel sunburn but your skin cells will not reproduce as effectively as they should for your age and you hasten your skin ageing.
How do you prevent UV-A Damage?
The answer is quite simple. First, understand and respect the Alpha Rays and take protective measures. Sunblock’s, hats and clothing are of paramount importance. One can also purchase protective shields for your car and house windows.
To reverse Alpha Ray damage requires treatment of the deeper dermis, so treatments will often be a little more aggressive i.e. Deeper Chemical Peels, Dermapen or Vampire Facials. The purpose of aesthetic treatment for UV-A damage is to hasten cellular turnover to eradicate damaged cells as fast as possible in the correct layer of the skin.

If you have been following me here on the blog and on my Facebook page, you know that the past few months have been all about Sun protection and preventing skin ageing caused by the Sun rays.
In this article, I want to explain why overcast days are no different than Sunny days when it comes to protecting your skin. Many of us tend to skip the Sunscreen when the Sun is hidden behind the clouds because we assume that the Sunrays cannot reach us. Overcast days are very deceiving and often end in bad Sunburns simply because we were not prepared.
Did you know?! Up to 80 percent of the Sun’s UV rays can pass through clouds!
As you probably know, there are two types of Sun rays that reach the earth: UVA and UVB rays. To briefly recap, the UVB rays damage your skin immediately and are responsible for tanning of burning your skin. UVA rays are the ones that age your skin and can go through clouds, smog or glass.
Understanding how UV rays affect us
The UV rays are measured in “levels”. It is an international scale ranging from 1 to 20 that indicates the amount of UV radiation that reaches the earth’s surface. If a UV ray reaches a level of 3 or above, it will most likely damage your skin. UV levels vary constantly, depending on ozone depletion, as well as seasonal and weather variations. If you are interested, a few apps are available to help you keep an eye on the daily UV levels
The effect of clouds
The clouds do affect UV levels as they can increase or reduce their intensity. Influencing factors include – what type of clouds are present that day and their thickness / depth. As I mentioned earlier, UV rays are very powerful and can penetrate through thin clouds, which means that the UV levels that will reach you will still be high on an overcast day. Another reason why cloudy days can be misleading is because sometimes, UV rays can reflect off the edge of a cloud, which in turn increases their levels.
Can I skip Sunscreen when the weather is cooler?
We often tend to assume that if the weather is cooler and the skin does not feel as hot, we will not get burnt, or at least not as quickly. But even though your skin feels more comfortable, it is getting the exact same dose of UV radiation as when the temperatures are high. Keep in mind that there is no correlation between UV levels and temperature.
Remember to apply a thick layer of Sunscreen on all exposed areas of your body, (including your face, ears, arms, hands and feet), 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. Do not forget to protect your lips with a lip balm with an SPF of at least 30. Reapply Sun protection (Sunscreen and lipbalm) every 2 hours or after swimming or sweating to ensure optimal protection.
You should follow these guidelines all year round, no matter what the weather. Protecting your skin will not only help you look younger, it will help protect you from developing skin cancer.

If you are dealing with lips that are not as full as they once were, I can help restore their youthful and full appearance year round, giving you kissable Valentine’s Day lips! Lip makeovers are becoming more and more popular at my practice as patients are attracted to their quick accessibility and non-invasiveness.
Lip sculpting involves augmenting or adding volume to thin lips. I can redefine and enhance the shape of the lips by using Juvederm. It is a hyaluronic acid filler which is also used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, acne scars and to help shape and add volume to thin lips. Juvederm is perfectly safe, it is a FDA approved filler.
A lip enhancement can be just a small correction of a sad mouth corner, making an irregular upper lip more balanced or making your lips fuller. Remember that a little improvement goes a long way! I am all about giving a natural yet younger look!
With a Juvederm lip treatment, I can build subtle volume, add softness and smoothness by restoring the natural hydrobalance of your lips, all in one simple rejuvenating treatment. Even small changes can make a big difference that will last between 9 and 12 months. Make sure to read this article to find out more about dermal fillers at my practice.

We all know that waking up with radiant, young and fresh looking skin always makes us feel beautiful and confident. Unfortunately, maintaining gorgeous skin all year round can be tricky. Sun exposure, the elements in general, smoking, diet and our drinking habits will very quickly affect the skin’s appearance: the skin begins to show wrinkles, spots, uneven skin tone, and scars.
The great news is that you are a chemical peel away from seeing what your skin truly looks like! Simply put, chemical peels slough off roughened, tired, dull skin surface layers to reveal new fresh plumper skin beneath! That alone can transform your looks, and take years off your appearance, making you feel on top of the world during your Valentines’ Day date and for many months thereafter. That being said, there are a variety of chemical peels to choose from, depending on your skin condition and the results you are looking for. This means that the end results as well as the recovery do vary from one chemical peel to the next. But do not worry: this is definitely something we will talk about during your consultation.
But in the meantime, this article on my blog should give you some guidance.
If you have looked in the mirror recently, and saw that your skin had lost its freshness, you probably need a little rejuvenating boost and could be a perfect candidate for a chemical peel at my practice. The results are simply incredible!
A chemical peel is extremely effective in improving any of the following skin conditions:
Maybe something to consider this February?
Botox is a very safe cosmetic treatment that can be used to diminish the appearance of deep lines on the forehead, marionette lines around the mouth, and crow’s feet that occur around the eyes.
Many patients, men and women just love how easy and convenient Botox is. It takes a few minutes, is virtually painless and efficiently diminishes the appearance of facial wrinkles while leaving you looking natural – but with that little wow factor. You will still look like yourself but as though you are coming back from a very relaxing holiday and the results will last between three and five months.
With Botox injections, there is no downtime but I strongly recommend that you book your appointment at my Krugersdorp practice a few days before Valentines’ Day in order to look your best for your special occasion! Of course, you and I will talk about the results and the possible post-treatments symptoms but in the meantime, find out more about Botox injections by visiting this page.
You see?! A rejuvenating makeover does not always require general anesthesia and painful recovery! Some minor procedures like those covered in this article can ease wrinkles in my office in less than an hour! Today, having some cosmetic TLC done can be a lunch-hour errand.

If you are planning to spend time at the coast this Summer, you will definitely have to be mindful about protecting your skin every day. You may not know this but the Ocean is one big Sun reflector. This means that you are more at risk for Sunburns and Sun damage on the shore than anywhere else. Not only is Sunburn frustrating, unsightly and painful, it also risks your safety in the grander scheme of things.
Leave a comment right here on the blog or on my Facebook page where I also post daily.
I have said it over and over again but I cannot emphasize this enough – Sunscreen is a step that cannot be skipped. It is the number one beach essential, the first item you should put in your suitcase and that has to remain in your beach bag at all times. My advice is to buy one with a high SPF that is waterproof this way you can swim without worrying about getting burnt. Never, ever lie in the Sun without putting on a good SPF and remind your loved ones about this too! You do not want to suffer the nasty repercussions of intense Sun exposure.
When it comes to Sunscreen application, I want to share 3 tips that most people tend to overlook:
Do not forget your lips when applying SPF. Exposure to UV rays can bring out skin conditions (like cold sores) but also accelerates ageing around the mouth and dehydrates the skin. So it is especially important to keep the sensitive skin of your lips well protected. Find a good, nourishing balm that includes a good SPF of at least 15.
Even covered in SPF, on a hot day, it is likely that you will start to feel the burn. To avoid feeling uncomfortable, always pack a sarong in your beach bag to cover yourself up. Pick a light and pretty fabric that will allow you to stay cool and elegant but will keep you shielded at the same time.
Wearing a wide-brimmed hat will further reinforce your Sun protection. Indeed, it is the best way to ensure that your face gets a good amount of shade but it also brings an element of chic to your beach look. Of course, wearing a wide-brimmed hat does not mean you can skip the Sunscreen. Remember: Sunscreen is not optional!
When you get back home after an outing at the beach, shower thoroughly and immediately for the salt from the Ocean will cause havoc on your skin and hair. I also recommend that you apply a good quality after-Sun product or a rich body butter all over your body as well as a thick layer of moisturizing cream on your face and neck. This step will help to replace lost moisture, soothe singed skin and prevent peeling.
I hope these tips will come in handy this Summer. As always, it was wonderful for me to share my knowledge with you all. Optimal Sun protection ensures beautiful, smooth, young looking skin for longer but most importantly, it gives you peace of mind, knowing that you are staying safe and healthy.
If you want to give your skin a little pick-me-up before next year, do not hesitate to phone my practice on 011 954 0070/3. I offer chemical peels, non-surgical skin rejuvenation, mesotherapy and much more!
