Learn more about how important exfoliation is for your skin
Regular exfoliation is a very important part of keeping your skin looking and feeling healthy. Ranging from gentle exfoliation a couple of times a week to more intense removal of the top layers of your skin, exfoliation goes a long way to helping you achieve the results you are looking for.
By lifting and removing dead skin cells through physical exfoliation, you reveal fresh skin cells which will assist to removing any dullness that your complexion may have gained.
How often should you exfoliate?
You should exfoliate your skin once or twice a week depending on how it reacts. Different people have different skin sensitivity, start out gently and take it from there. During warmer weather you might do it slightly more often to keep it clean while in colder months you might do it less as the skin is drier in our Winter – it might become irritated and not as tolerant.
How do you know when you have exfoliated too much?
You will know that you have exfoliated too much when your skin becomes red and irritated. If you haven’t exfoliated enough, your skin will look dull and your skincare products will not be absorbed as efficiently.
Chemical vs Manual Exfoliation
Chemical exfoliation makes use of chemicals to remove dead skin cells and other impurities. Manual exfoliation is done using a cloth or similar textured surface to remove dead skins cells.
How to exfoliate?
You might need to try a few different methods before you find the one that works best for you and your skin. Gentle exfoliation done with a facecloth or muslin cloth can be done almost daily, just make sure that you use a clean facecloth to prevent the spread of bacteria which can cause breakouts. Scrubs also work well, just make sure that you follow the instructions and use them gently. When it comes to exfoliation, be gentle and take a ‘less is more approach’ so that you don’t irritate your skin.
When to opt for a chemical peel?
The frequency of chemical peels depends on their concentration of glycolic acid. The stronger they are, the less frequently they can be done.
