SLOWING DOWN AGING – WITH AND WITHOUT THE HELP OF AESTHETIC PROCEDURES

This month, my newsletter is all about how a healthy diet is directly linked to early skin ageing and premature wrinkles. YOUR BEST SKINCARE ALLIES ARE NOT IN THE BATHROOM!

If, as the old adage goes, we are what we eat, then we need look no further than the kitchen for the secret of eternal youth.

What you eat can make or break your skin so make the right choices at the supermarket and you will notice a massive difference in the overall quality of your skin in a matter of a few days!

Equating fresh food with a fresh complexion may sound simplistic, but there is undeniable evidence that a good diet promotes good health from the inside out. Firstly you really do need to drink two litres of water daily in order to flush out toxins and promote skin turnover.

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to stop the ageing process which means that no matter how thoughtfully you shop and how well you eat, your skin will most likely show signs of aging at some point. And of course, genetics and the kind of lifestyle you lead will also greatly influence the way your skin ages.

There is so much you can do every day to delay aging! For instance, by eating foods containing anti-oxidants, you can not only restore elasticity to the skin, but reduce your likelihood of developing serious illnesses.

If your diet is right, your skin will be better, your hair more glossy and you will look and feel more youthful.

As a guideline, you should go for bright fruits and vegetables, the reds and yellows and oranges, which are strong in colour, and the dark, green ones, such as Savoy cabbage and avocado.

Fish is a great source of essential fatty acids (EFAs) like omega-3 and omega-6, which reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation triggers the cells to clog the pore, causing acne. It also leads to wrinkles down the line.

The fish that contain the most EFAs are salmon, mackerel, and tuna (particularly the albacore and bluefin varieties). EFAs are also found in almonds, hazelnuts, and flaxseed.

 
Fat is your friend!
Many women have dry, flaky skin because they don’t eat enough fat. If you’re getting fewer than 20 grams of fat a day (roughly 2 tablespoons of oil), your skin may not be able to lubricate itself and your body may not absorb enough vitamin A, which your skin needs to prevent premature aging.

So remember: fats aren’t as bad as you think and olive oil is your best ally in the fight against unsightly wrinkles!

In our twenties, collagen (a fibre that keeps skin firm) is produced more slowly and dead skin cells are shed less quickly. Good genes can keep you looking young but research suggests that lycopene and beta carotene also may help by scavenging for free radicals that contribute to skin aging.

Eat sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe and leafy greens for beta carotene and include lycopene-packed tomatoes and watermelon in your diet. Come in for a skin rejuvenation treatment to start off on the right track.
 

THE MAIN AGING CULPRITS…

While a little bit of colour in your cheeks is flattering, full-on redness isn’t exactly the look you’re after. And certain foods and beverages, such as spices, cured meats, MSG, and alcohol (particularly red wine), cause blood vessels to dilate, bringing on facial redness.

Make sure to consume these foods in moderation in order to leave your skin tone even and radiant! I can correct all these issues in a few painless minutes, but prevention is better than cure right?

If you are serious about keeping your skin looking young and smooth for as long as possible, you must be prepared to make sacrifices. Refined carbohydrates such as white bread and pasta are a complete no-no as they release a chemical called collagenase, which destroys the collagen in the skin and creates wrinkles.

I cannot stress this enough: summer isn’t over yet so apply sunscreen daily. The sun is responsible for the majority of early signs of aging and most importantly can cause cancer. Better safe than sorry!

Sunscreen helps keep your skin healthy and beautiful, protecting it from the outside in—but key nutrients in certain foods can shield your skin from damage from the inside out: vitamin C, lycopene, omega-3s, caffeine and isoflavones in soy.

 

HOW ABOUT SOME EXTRA HELP?

 Now that I have given a brief guide on the foods you should and shouldn’t eat to keep your skin looking young and healthy, I will tell you what I can do at my practice to delay or pause the signs of aging you may have noticed on your face. From Botox to Chemical peels, there are a lot of options to consider if you are bothered by wrinkles. →MESOTHERAPY

Have you ever heard of mesotherapy? It is a great skin rejuvenation technique of injecting a small amount of a customized mixture of conventional pharmaceutical or homeopathic medications, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes into the mesoderm – or middle layer of skin.

Not only do I use mesotherapy for skin rejuvenation but I also use Mesotherapy to treat aging, sagging, and wrinkling of the skin involving the face and neck. It is also used to delay the progression of wrinkling and to rejuvenate ashen complexions.

 

→BOTOX

You must all have heard of Botox before. Maybe you have even tried it? It is a popular treatment at my practice and my patients have been enjoying the predictable and natural results it offers.

It works wonders on wrinkles but that’s not all! It is a wonderful addition to any skin rejuvenation treatment regime! Hit like if you know someone who has had Botox before?

→CHEMICAL PEELS

A chemical peel is the application of a chemical solution to sun-damaged, unevenly pigmented, and finely wrinkled facial areas. The procedure reduces and corrects imperfections by peeling away the skin’s top layers.

Something you may not know is that Chemical peels are also great to treat the décolletage and hands!

To increase their skin rejuvenation effectiveness, TCA and AHA peels are often combined with other skin-rejuvenating treatments, such as microdermabrasion, needling and Botox or dermal fillers.
